Osteoarthritis prevention is possible and involves both primary and secondary prevention.

Primary prevention, identifying factors that increase the risk of arthritis, thereby intervening to reduce the occurrence of the disease:

  • control weight,
  • maintain good posture and avoid excessive, repeated loads and stresses,
  • exercise regularly,
  • treat incorrect posture habits, increase muscle strength, thereby recovering joint mobility
  • avoid high-impact activities or sports that require propulsion of any form or involve repeated mechanical shocks,
  • choose exercises that help “strengthen” the muscle surrounding the joint, providing stabilization without being too hard.

Secondary prevention, assuring early diagnosis and control of risk factors, and introducing additional tools to prevent or delay disease progression. Useful treatments include dietary supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or intra-articular administration of hyaluronic acid (viscosupplementation) - make sure to talk to your doctor first.

Tertiary prevention, including medical and self-management strategies to limit the pain, disability and other effects once the disease is established.
